What is Psychotherapy and Counselling?

Counselling explores problems that have arisen recently in a person’s life, for example stress and anxiety due to a recent painful life event. These kinds of problems may respond well to a short term form of counselling of 5-10 sessions.

Psychotherapy on the other hand tends to explore difficulties that have been around for a while and are connected to relationship patterns that have developed over a long period of time and therefore may need more time to change. Some difficulties are related to an earlier period of a person’s life so may need longer term, more in depth therapy to explore and resolve.

I offer both short term counselling and longer term psychotherapy. At a first meeting we would discuss which will be more helpful for you. If, for example, the problem has occurred recently for the first time, then short term counselling may be the way forward. An example for longer term, more in depth psychotherapy could be that the problem began many years ago and frequently recurs.

I offer psychotherapy and counselling for a wide range of psychological and emotional problems. Here are some examples of issues that I often work with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Panic attacks
  • Career & life skills
  • Relationship Difficulties (families, couples)
  • Compulsive Behaviours, OCD
  • Anger outbursts
  • Abuse and Trauma
  • Addictive Behaviours
  • Bereavements and Loss
  • Self-Esteem and Confidence
  • Psychological Support with Physical Health Problems
  • Life crises

A 60 minute session costs £70 (concessions available)

Life Coaching

Sometimes the issues you are struggling with may not need psychotherapy or counselling, and it may be more helpful to have a small number of Life Coaching sessions which would allow you to consider your current situation and think about what you want to do with your one precious life. Life Coaching offers some private time to think, plan and explore the skills required to attain the outcomes you wish to achieve in your life.

Some examples of how coaching can help:

  • Developing self esteem
  • Finding your personal life direction
  • Making difficult decisions
  • Building confidence
  • Dealing with job loss
  • Dealing with negative thinking and brooding
